Sovreign Council Meeting

Sovereign Council Meeting

Sovereign Council is open to all members to attend as observers and attendance is encouraged.

The Forum

Overarching Forum Theme

The Forum will be situated within the context of the present-day and the evolving twenty-first century. It will focus on existing and emerging social issues that challenge, or will be expected to challenge, society and governments’ ability to address them. This, and subsequent deliberations, will be overlaid by priory/commandry-specific perspectives and considerations.

The Forum will focus on identifying social issues requiring support from the non-government sector in partnership with government or other non-government organisations, or as separate initiatives.

Against this background, the Forum will consider how different priories and commandries might develop appropriate responses as they seek to undertake their ongoing daily functions consistent with fulfilling the objects of the Order.

The Forum will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the historical roots or origins and evolution of the Order which gave rise to our customs, traditions, ethos, protocols and procedures.

To these ends, the Forum will explore possible roadmaps of future pathways for the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitallers as the twenty-first century progresses.

In essence, the Forum will provide opportunities for the ordinary members of the Sovereign Order to articulate their ideas and have their say on the work of the Order, which will only be achieved through the commitments and efforts of its members.

Proposed Implementation

It is proposed to undertake the program through a number of sessions of verbal presentations and panel discussions. Presentations will be grouped into sessions (two per session) with panels occupying stand-alone sessions.

Each presentation will comprise a total of 25 minutes (15 minutes presentation followed by 10 minutes discussion/ in a Q&A format).

It is proposed to include two keynote presentations (one at the commencement of each Forum part). The Forum will be structured into eight sessions over the two morning parts.

Unlike many contemporary ‘conferences’, this Forum has been designed and will be structured to provide the audience with maximum opportunities to participate, for example, with a question time built into the conclusion of each individual presentation, a session summary section, and audience participation in each panel discussion.

It is proposed to video record the total Forum proceedings and consideration will be given to live streaming.

Proposed Outputs

It is proposed to produce an edited record of the Forum’s proceedings which will involve presentations being developed into papers (powerpoint presentations where that is not possible) and the capture of panel discussions. Session introductions and summaries will also be captured in the edited proceedings. The editors will be drawn from the SCM24 Member’s Forum Sub-Committee.

The edited proceedings will be supported by the video capture of the Forum.
